Marlborough – A candlelight vigil will be held on the lawn of the Frank D. Walker Building, 244 Main St., on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. to commemorate International Overdose Awareness Day.
In memory of those lives lost to overdose in Massachusetts in 2015, 1,531 purple flags have been placed on the front lawn of the Walker Building.
A slideshow will be held prior to the vigil at 7 p.m. featuring photos of those who have died of a drug overdose.
The vigil will also feature special guest speaker Jim Wahlberg, executive director of the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, who has worked in and around the field of addiction recovery for 25 years. He co-wrote and co-produced the film “If Only,” as a way to encourage an open dialogue between parents and children about prescription drug misuse and opioid addiction.
In case of rain, the vigil will be held at First Church in Marlborough, 37 High St.
The event is sponsored by the Marlborough Substance Use Prevention Coalition in conjunction with Wicked Sober – Massachusetts Outreach Program, Recovery Centers of America, Millennium Health and Wahl St. Productions.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Event Coordinator Kathy Leonard at [email protected].
