Northborough – The Northboro Hash House Harriers running club invites all runners and walkers over 21 to participate in the sixth annual Red Dress Run Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. The run begins at The Texas BBQ Company, 309 Main St., in Northborough. Registration is $20, plus pay-as-you-go stops, and includes a 5K run and tickets for beer or water. All net proceeds will be donated to local charities.

This Red Dress Run’s 5K course is a closely guarded secret because it will be spontaneously marked by lead runners called “hares.” The hares will leave baking flour and chalk marks for the runners to follow, marking a path leading to three different drink stops where they will have a rest, socialize, and redeem a drink ticket for a beer or soft drink.

The Red Dress Run honors a club member who attended her first club run in 1987, while wearing a red dress instead of running clothes. After being mocked for wearing that, she ran anyway. Other runners of both sexes began wearing a red dress as a joke, and soon the Red Dress Run became a tradition around the world. Men and women must be over 21 and wear a red dress to participate.
