obit-richard-thompsonMarlborough – Richard R. “Gus” Thompson, 83, of Marlborough, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016.

Following his graduation from Westborough High School, Gus enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War, and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He had been employed by the city of Marlborough in both the Street Department and later the Cemetery Department before retiring in 1980. He then spent his free time fishing, gardening, painting, and building stone walls.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Falco) Thompson of Marlborough, to whom he had been married for the past 61 years, and his three children, Laura Tonelli and her husband Tim of Dudley, Melissa Swatko and her husband Paul of Merrimack, N.H., and Christopher Thompson and his wife Victoria of Warren, R.I. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mandy Tonelli of Dudley and Timothy Tonelli and his wife Ashley of Marlborough, and his sister, Shirley Jackson of Marlborough.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 4-7 p.m., at the Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home Thursday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson Street, Marlborough.

The family is grateful for the excellent care Gus received at Coleman House.
