obit-thomas-j-reidShrewsbury – Thomas J. Reid, of Shrewsbury, formerly of Milton, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 73.

Tom was born Feb. 12, 1943 in Boston, a son of the late Dr. Thomas and Marion A. (Fitzpatrick) Reid. Raised and educated in Milton, he attended Boston University and then served with the United States Air Force during the mid-1960s in California and South America.

Tom worked for the former First National Bank of Boston. During the 1970s, he served as special assistant to former US Senator Edward Brooke. At the end of Sen. Brooke’s senate career, Tom served as a contract negotiator for the U.S. Small Business Administration and Regulatory Office in Boston. In the mid-1980s, he moved to Shrewsbury to work for Davis Press, Inc. of Worcester, where he focused on developing, marketing and fundraising graphics for academic and non-profit clients in the New England area. After the sale of Davis Press, he was appointed Engineering Services Manager for then Mass Highway Department by Gov. William Weld and served in that position until his retirement in 2009.

He was involved with many organizations in both the Worcester and Boston areas. He was elected Town Meeting member in Milton, and served on various committees including Spaulding Rehabilitation, Spaulding Development, Board of Massachusetts General Hospital and Regional Vice President of AFGE.

After moving to Shrewsbury, he served in various capacities with local organizations. He was a longtime member of the Shrewsbury Republican Town Committee, serving a stint as vice chairman. He also was Secretary of the Members Council of the Worcester Art Museum, Director of Family Services of Central Mass, Deputy Commissioner of the Worcester Elections Committee, and long-term Membership Chairman of the Bohemians. He also had been a member of the Boston Athenaeum, Worcester Club, and the Tennis and Racquet Club.

An avid golfer, he was proud of the hole-in-one that he made on the 12th hole at The Country Club, Brookline. He and his good friend Robert Stewart partnered to win the annual Sargent Memorial Fourball Tournament at the Essex Country Club, Manchester.

He leaves his children, Abigail D. Reid of Boston and W. Curtis Reid of Watertown, and his former wife and friend, Elaine Davis Reid of Shrewsbury. His first wife, Linda Eastburn Reid of Pinehurst, N.C., predeceased him.

Family and friends will honor and remember Tom’s life by gathering Saturday, Dec. 17 in All Saints Episcopal Church, 10 Irving St., Worcester, where his funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. The Reverend Greg Lisby will officiate. Inurnment in the church columbarium will follow. There are no calling hours.
