Northborough – Over 500 runners participated in the ninth annual Turkey Trot, held Nov. 24, raising over $14,000 for the Northborough Food Pantry.

At its inception in 2008, organizer Rita Matraia said she “just wanted to get people moving on Thanksgiving morning”. That year 30 participants joined her from her Colby Street home to “trot” the 5K route. Runners at that time were asked to bring a canned good to donate to the food pantry.

Each year the event grew and eventually became too big for Matraia’s neighborhood so she arranged with the town to move it to the Marion E. Zeh School in 2014. Despite an unexpected snow storm, over 200 runners still came and raised $5,650 for the food pantry.
