Shrewsbury – Mrs. Alberta B. “Buckie” (Bulkley) Somers, of the Community at Southgate, formerly of Waynesville, N.C. and Sarasota, Fla., died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 in Shrewsbury Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was 94.

Born Feb. 17, 1922 in Collingswood, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Erma (Hineline) Bulkley. A graduate of Haddonfield High School in Haddonfield, N.J., she later graduated from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. She married Alfred J. “Jay” Somers Dec. 26, 1942 in Haddonfield. Jay enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during World War II. Buckie worked as a lab technician at Duke University Hospital before staying at home to raise their children.

Jay’s work as a CPA and financial executive took them to Cedar Grove and Westfield, N.J. and later to Chagrin Falls, Ohio for 15 years. Upon Jay’s retirement, they divided their time between Waynesville, N.C. and Sarasota, Fla. They moved to Southgate in 2013 to be closer to their daughter.

They enjoyed rounds of golf and friendships that ensued from memberships at Bent Tree Country Club in Sarasota and Waynesville Country Club in North Carolina. Buckie enjoyed a good game of bridge with friends. Social by nature she will be remembered for her great sense of humor. She and Jay were active members of Haywood Christian Ministry and Habitat for Humanity, both in Waynesville, N.C.

In addition to her husband of 74 years, Jay Somers, she leaves their children, Alfred J. Somers Jr. of Sarasota, Fla. and Janet L. Gauvin and her husband Ron of Southbridge; her grandsons, Ryan Gauvin and his wife Melinda and Keith Gauvin and his wife, Elaina, all of Spencer; her great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Alivia, Christopher, and Nicolas; her sister, Erma Glenn of Kennesaw, Ga.; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to honor and remember Buckie’s life will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m., in the Chapel at Southgate, 30 Julio Dr., Shrewsbury. There are no calling hours.
