Southborough – Ninth-graders at Fay School were treated to a visit from seniors from the Southborough Senior Center Feb. 1 as part of the school yearlong learning initiative. The school has partnered with the center to offer events and activities the provide enrichment to the seniors as well as learning opportunities for students.
Seventeen seniors attended the Feb. 1 event. They sat with ninth-graders and shared stories of their memories growing up, with tales of rationing during World War II, escaping from WWII Belgium, recalling the day when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, doing bomb shelter drills, and more.
“The kids were fascinated, but equally wonderful was the way the seniors were so eager to learn about the lives of our ninth-graders, many of whom are boarders from across the United States and around the world,” said Erin Ash Sullivan, director of marketing and communications at Fay School.
The students are currently studying 20th-century American history, and the seniors’ personal accounts allowed the students to make connections to what they are learning in class.
Last fall, 30 Southborough seniors came to Fay for an American history lecture focusing on Fay’s collection of presidential documents, followed by a luncheon.
In April, the seniors will be back to Fay for a third visit with a music faculty member who will be teaching a master class. The seniors will have the opportunity to rehearse a piece of music with Fay School’s Chamber Singers.
