Shrewsbury – Cushing C. Bozenhard died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017. He was 92.
He leaves his wife of 71 years, Gladys N. (Nelson) Bozenhard; their son, Howard C. Bozenhard and his wife Elena Beyer of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Alexandra Bozenhard of New York City, Elizabeth Marino and her husband Robert of Balitmore, Md., and David Bozenhard of Philadelphia; and one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Marino. He was predeceased by his son, Charles N. Bozenhard, and his daughter-in-law, Mary Ross Bozenhard.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was raised in Yonkers, N.Y., the only child of Charles C. and Norine H. (Doane) Bozenhard. Cushing served in the U.S. Navy as an ensign during the end of World War II.
Cush attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1945. In 1959, he earned the status of Registered Professional Engineer.
In 1957, Cush founded The Bozenhard Company, Inc. in Shrewsbury and in 1963 moved the company to 173 Grove St. in Worcester. The Bozenhard Company was a prominent general construction company which built and renovated many landmark buildings in Worcester County. After 30 years as a general contractor, Cush worked for the next 30 years as a construction manager and consultant and as an expert legal witness for construction accident lawsuits.
Cush was affiliated and involved with many organizations over his career, including the Worcester Executives Association, Mechanics Hall Property Committee, Memorial Hospital, Friends of Goddard Library, the Worcester Art Museum, Notre Dame Academy, the Shrewsbury Public Library, and many others.
In his younger years, Cush was an avid sailor and he taught Seamanship classes for the U.S. Power Squadron. In addition to his engineering expertise, he was a skilled carpenter and built his Shrewsbury home by hand. He loved being outdoors building stone walls or splitting firewood with a maul.
His greatest love was his library. He collected, cataloged and sold thousands of used and rare books under his hobby book dealership “Ex Libris Used and Rare Books.” His passion for book collecting and literature was endless.
Most importantly, he was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with a wonderful sense of humor. He was generous to others and gave opportunities, advice and guidance to many. He was no ordinary man and will be forever missed.
