Mary E. Mooney, 88, of Southborough

Southborough – Mary E. (O’Connell) Mooney, 88, of Southborough, a devoted mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 25, 2017. She was the wife of the late George A. Mooney Jr., who passed away in 1984.

Born in Framingham, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Lamb) O’Connell.

Mary was a graduate of Hopkinton High School and an Army (WAC) veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. While in the service she was stationed in Germany and Washington, D.C., where she was assigned to the Pentagon and marched in President Eisenhower’s 1952 Inaugural Parade.

Among her many interests and employments, Mary thoroughly enjoyed her time working at the Southborough Post Office and Fay School.

She was a fiercely independent woman who was of strong faith, and a kind and selfless friend to many.

She is survived by her children, Karen Bessette and her husband George of Rhode Island and Florida, Kevin of Hudson, George and his wife Katie of Southborough, Susan Allington and her husband Chris of Shrewsbury, and Simon of Framingham; eight grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Richard, Sean, Jack, Mary-Kate, Hallee, and Brayden; a brother, Fred O’Connell of Framingham; and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by four of her siblings, Charles, William, and Robert O’Connell and Virginia (O’Connell) Di Bendetto.

There are no calling hours. Funeral and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made in her memory with a kind gesture and a simple smile, for it is that kindness that will keep her spirit alive.

Arrangements are under the care of the Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Southborough.
