Shrewsbury – June Costello Liberty died peacefully at home Monday, April 24, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

As a Shrewsbury resident for 70 years, June lived her life as a spirited and dedicated mother, talented swimmer, an educator, and a devoted volunteer in her community. In her early years, her passion and talent for swimming won her a spot on the U.S. National Swimming Team and a bid in the Olympic Games, which was unfortunately taken by the outbreak of WWII. Later, she took her love of swimming into education. She taught swimming for many years for the town of Shrewsbury and at South High Community School in Worcester. June also directed and taught in the CCD program at St Anne’s Church in Shrewsbury. For 50 years, June dedicated her time and energies volunteering for the American Red Cross.

She leaves her six beloved children, Kathleen M. O’Neill of Upton, Joan Fallon and her husband William of Cataumet, Joseph W. Liberty of Bellingham, Michele Syslo and her husband Allen of Warwick, R.I., and Michael P. Liberty and Patricia M. Liberty, both of Shrewsbury. She also leaves her 10 grandchildren, Katherine Nelson, Patricia Flynn, Jennifer Rembelski, Joseph Liberty, John Liberty, John Fallon, Brittany Fallon, Michael Syslo, Chris Syslo, and Brian Jackson. She also leaves seven great-grandchildren.

Above all, June was a devoted mother whose family inspired her to be the beautiful woman, mother, and grandmother that she was.

Family and friends will celebrate June’s life Thursday, April 27, from 4-7 p.m., at the Chiampa Funeral Home 〜 The Sumner House, 5 Church Road, on the Common, Shrewsbury Center. Funeral services for June will be held Friday, April 28 with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury, at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
