Marlborough – Joan Kass Gouveia, a resident of New Horizons, Marlborough, and formerly of Framingham, passed away peacefully Monday, May 8, 2017 at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Joan was born Oct. 28, 1931 in New York City. She loved learning and had a passion for making the world a better place for all humankind. She earned a B.A., an M.Ed., and a CAGS degree.

Joan brought her zest for living and learning to her long career in the Framingham Public Schools as a literacy educator. She spent many dedicated years at the Mary E. Stapleton School as the building’s Reading Specialist.

Joan Kass Gouveia was married to the late Stan Kass for many years. She leaves behind their daughter, Evelyn Williamson and her husband Jerry and son Dan Kass. She also leaves four grandchildren, Kelly Kass, Ashley, Justin, and Kymberlee Williamson. Joan is survived by one brother, Larry Soifer and his wife, Evy.

After retiring from the Framingham Public Schools, Joan remarried the late Peter Gouveia. Joan leaves behind her stepchildren, David Gouveia and his wife Bobbie and Nancy Benson and her husband Geoff, as well as four step-grandchildren.

In addition to her first love of spending high quality time with her family and friends, in Joan’s retirement years, she continued learning and reaching out to serve others. Her interests in intuitive counseling and metaphysics led her to earn a certification in reading the Akashic Records.

Joan loved to dance and had a warm, loving glow that she openly shared with the many lives she touched.

A celebration of life is being planned.

Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org) or to The Nature Conservatory (www.nature.org).
