Westborough issues commemorative postmark
Commemorative envelope with sketch of Westborough Town Hall

Westborough – As a community service, the U. S. Postal Service offers pictorial postmarks to commemorate local events celebrated in communities throughout the nation.

Historians, stamp collectors, and citizens will be excited to learn that arrangements have been made with the Westborough Post Office to celebrate the town’s date of incorporation – Nov. 18, 1717 – with a commemorative postmark issue.

In preparation for this issue, wordage has been determined and envelopes with a pencil sketch of the Westborough Town Hall have been printed. Postmarks will include the words: “Westborough, Massachusetts, INCORPORATED 1717, 300 YEARS AGO TODAY.” The cancellation section in the circle will read: “Westborough, MA, Nov. 18, 1717, 01581.”

According to a local postal worker, “when this gets posted, there will be any number of stamp collectors from across the country who will want this as a collector’s item.”

One thousand envelopes with a sketch of the Town Hall have been printed and are available without charge to all historians and collectors interested in this unique item. Envelopes and instructions are available at the Town Clerk’s office and Westborough Public Library during regular office hours. The self-addressed stamped envelopes must be submitted according to the instructions by Saturday, Nov. 18.
