Westborough Cricket League’s fall tournament comes to an end
The Rebels warm up prior to the fall tournament championship.

Westborough – Under sunny skies on an unseasonably warm fall day, the Westborough Cricket League’s inaugural fall tournament came to a close Oct. 21. Over the course of three hours, the Rebels fought off a slow start to triumph over the ECC Hoickers 69-55 to win the Fall Tournament Championship.

The dramatic match that unfolded in front of a faithful crowd of local cricket fans was a fitting end to a successful tournament. Consisting of 16 teams with players from all over Massachusetts, the tournament was held over seven weekends on the cricket pitch installed at Westborough’s Hennessy Field earlier this year. The tournament was a satisfying culmination of hard work and dedication for Nishit Mehta, the organizer of the tournament and member of the Westborough Cricket Club.

“It was brilliant, the way [the tournament] shaped up,” said Mehta. “We had families out here watching the games throughout it and people have asked us to continue hosting it.”

Although satisfied, Mehta envisions more for the pitch in the future with plans of a second parking lot, level playing surface, corporate advertisers, and lights. In addition to the infrastructure improvements, he also wants to grow Westborough Cricket Club’s youth program. Making the game accessible to a wide range of people is his – and the club’s – ultimate goal.

Said Mehta, “We want to get more kids involved. If we could get fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders in the program and interested in cricket, that would be great. The key to that, of course, is the schools.”
