George Street Challenge attracts many locals

Region – Jesse Colman of Shrewsbury competes in the 10th George Street Challenge for Major Taylor July 24. Colman raced in the Men's 15 + under, finishing fourth (65th overall). The annual event, held at the intersection of Main and George streets in Worcester, pits the racers on an 18° grade and 500-foot course, while they race the clock.

According to Wikipedia, “Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor (26 Nov. 1878 to 21 June 1932) was an American cyclist who won the world one-mile (1.6 km) track cycling championship in 1899 after setting numerous world records and overcoming racial discrimination. Taylor was the first African-American athlete to achieve the level of world champion and only the second black man to win a world championship, after Canadian boxer George Dixon.”
