Rotary Club gears for annual Pancake Breakfast

By Andrew Sullivan Contributing Writer

Northborough - The town of Northborough has several annual events that are longstanding traditions, and the Rotary Club’s Annual Pancake Breakfast is one of those.

Few events match the longevity of the Rotary Club’s Annual Pancake Breakfast – now in its 39th year.

Residents dive into the delicious breakfast feast that is the Northborough Rotary Club’s biggest yearly fund-raiser and raises the money needed to fund the club’s scholarships presented to local students. Event organizer Addison Redfield believes it’s a fun event for the public.

“I’m very proud to be part of it,” Redfield said. “It’s something that people really look forward to. It’s a real social event.”

This year’s Rotary Club Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday, March 21 at Lincoln Street School from 8 a.m. to noon. Tickets are available for $4 for adults and $2 for children and seniors.

Along with the great breakfast, there will be entertainment provided, including music from the Algonquin Regional High School and Melican Middle School bands, clowns for children, and a raffle. All the money raised from the breakfast will be deposited in the Rotary Club’s scholarship fund.

“We are most likely one of the most successful pancake breakfasts around, in terms of fund-raising,” Redfield said.

It is something that the whole town can participate in. With tickets at an affordable price, everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the experience. Redfield feels the whole town benefits from coming together for a special cause, and its continued success through the years shows it is a favorite among residents.

“It’s very gratifying to see people come every year and re- new old acquaintances and meet new friends and just have a good time,” Redfield said.

Last year’s pancake breakfast funded seven scholarships for graduating seniors. According to Redfield, the club expects to raise between $8,000 and $10,000 from this year’s breakfast. Redfield said he expects the pancake breakfast to feed about 500.

The chance to help out students in need is a thrill for Redfield and the rest of the Rotary Club.

“It feels very good,” Redfield said, “When we give out the checks to the students, we do it at a special Rotary luncheon. We ask them to come and receive the checks and tell us about themselves and what their hopes and desires are for the future. It’s extremely rewarding.”

Local businesses have always been a big help in raising money for this event. Over the years, their contributions have been a big reason for the success, and Redfield hopes to continue that in the years to come.
