Local Rotary clubs hope to offer comfort to families of preemies

Region – When a baby is born prematurely, parents often experience a host of emotions including anxiety, fear and depression. While they of course want to be by their little one’s side, that is not always possible, especially when the hospitalization is, as is often in cases of preemies, quite lengthy. But now parents whose babies are patients in the UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Worcester have another way to stay in touch when they can’t be there in person –a special web camera that allows them to see their child via real-time video.

Fighting for a cure, one photo at a time

Region – Kim Rosen has two hobbies – photography and fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The photographer, who launched “Photos for Cures” more than two years ago, has donated all fees she charges for portraits and other photo sessions to St. Jude’s; so far she has raised over $12,000 for the hospital.

Collecting unwanted bicycles for Africa

Hudson – Unwanted bicycles can be put to good use, and St. Michael Parish is making it easy through January for anyone in Hudson and the surrounding communities. A volunteer will pick up old or new bicycles, most of which will be shipped to Ghana, Africa, where many people have no access to other transportation. The pick-up drive is also collecting sewing machines, which can help create work for poverty-stricken women and girls in Ghana.
