Region –Today is Monday, Nov. 12, the 317th day of 2012.
Officially yesterday, Nov. 11, was Veterans Day. Many towns, including Westborough, are holding their commemorations today.
According to the United State Department of Veterans Affairs website, it was President Woodrow Wilson who in 1919 proclaimed that Nov. 11 would be commemorated each year to recognize the end of the “Great War” – World War 1. The day was first known as “Armistice Day.”
November 9th, 2012
Region – Today is Friday, Nov. 9, the 314th day of 2012.
On this day in 1965, a huge power failure near Ontario left millions of people in the eastern parts of the U.S. and Canada in the dark.
On this day in 1872, a fire that started in a basement warehouse ripped through the city of Boston, killing 14 people and destroying hundreds of buildings.

On this day in 1960, John F. Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon to become the 35th president of the United States of America.
November 7th, 2012
Region – Today is Wednesday, Nov. 7, the 312th day of 2012.
On this day in 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to fourth term. He remains the only president to serve more than two terms and in fact, will be the only one to do so. In 1951, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was passed, which limits a president’s tenure in office to two terms of four years each.

In honor of this important day, here’s some presidential and election trivia:
Four candidates have won the popular vote but lost the presidency: Andrew Jackson, Samuel J. Tilden, Grover Cleveland, and of course, Al Gore.
Eight presidents lost their bids for a second term: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush.

On this day in 2008, a record number of Americans went to the polls and by night’s end, had elected the 44th president of the United States, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois.

Region –Today is Friday, Nov. 2, the 307th day of 2012.
On this day in 1986, the late Norwegian distance runner Grete Waitz won her eighth New York City marathon.
On this day in 1983 U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed a bill that authorized the third Monday in January each year to be acknowledged as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Region –Today is Thursday, Nov. 1, the 306th day of 2012.
In what seems crazy now, NHL goaltenders never wore masks in spite of the fact that pucks zoomed at them 90 miles per hour on a regular basis. But on this day in 1959, the Montreal Canadien’s all-star goalie Jacques Plante said “enough is enough” and thus became the first NHL goaltender to wear a full face mask.

Region – Today is Wednesday, Oct. 31, the 305th day of 2012. Today is Halloween!
In honor of this wonderful spooky holiday, we offer a few interesting Halloween tidbits.
Halloween (or as it was commonly known, “All Hallows Eve,”) has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival, Samhain, which celebrated the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Other theories have the holiday linked to pagan festivals of the dead. Many believe Oct. 31 was the day the dead would come back to cause havoc, by making people sick or damaging crops.

Region – Today is Tuesday, Oct. 30, the 304th day of 2012.
On this day last year the region was hit with a late October nor’easter that left many communities without power for up to a week.
On this day in 1991, the “perfect storm” hit the New England and Canadian coasts. The story of the fishing boat, the Andrea Gail, which was lost at sea in this storm, was chronicled in the best-seller, “The Perfect Storm” by Sebastian Junger.
