The Shrewsbury Historical Society, located at the 1830 Brick Schoolhouse, Church Road, Shrewsbury, will present “Early American Criminals of New England” Jan. 23, starting at 7 p.m. With a special focus on New England, speaker Anthony Vaver will talk about the crimes and the punishment of America’s most notorious criminals. Don’t expect tales involving religious blasphemy, pillories, or witches. Vaver will recount stories of the burglars, thieves and murderers who plagued colonial America and became media sensations of their day. He will also talk about the unusual methods used to punish these offenders, and how the American colonies once served as a dumping ground for Britain’s unwanted convicts. Free and open to the public, with refreshments served. Call Erik at 774-230-5826 for more information.
