Westborough: Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton to host fundraiser

March 1, 2014

| $40

Westborough??”Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton is throwing a party. The “Fur Ball,” to be held Saturday, March 1, at the Indian Meadows Golf Club in Westborough, will feature a live band, dancing, hors d'seuvres, drinks, dessert, and a silent auction. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the nonprofit, no-kill shelter's efforts to rescue and rehome cats and dogs.

This is the second year Baypath will host the Fur Ball.

“The first year was a big success. We are hoping to sell out again this year,” said Kandice Glassman, a member of the shelter's board of directors and co-chair of this year's ball.

“Local businesses and people in the community have been very generous,” she added.

Among the more than $8,000 in products that area businesses have been donated to this year's event, there are floral centerpieces for tables, desserts from Poppies, and a long list of items for the live and silent auctions.

That auction list includes tickets to Disney World with a three-night stay at a nearby hotel, an iPad Air, ski lift tickets, gift certificates to many local restaurants and salons/spas, museum tickets, and dog-training sessions. There are also more than a dozen sports memorabilia items including a baseball signed by former Red Sox star Pedro Martinez and a hockey stick signed by this year's Boston Bruins team.

Radio personality and host of “Breakfast with the Beatles” and “Sports Hub” Chachi Loprete will attend the Fur Ball.

“He always brings some surprise sports items with him for the auction,” said Amy Hibel, who is also a board member and co-chair of the event.

“Bob's Your Uncle,” a Metrowest-based cover band comprised of five veteran musicians, will play a catalog of music spanning seven decades. The auctions will take place in a separate area from the music and dancing.

The Fur Ball is the latest of several successful fundraisers Baypath has organized in the last few years, including an annual 5K race in Hopkinton State Park. One hundred percent of the ticket sales and revenue from the event will go toward the shelter's operating costs and veterinary care for the animals. In 2013, Baypath took in, vetted, and adopted out approximately 900 cats and dogs.

The money raised at the Fur Ball will support ongoing work, but the board is also looking to the future, including starting a capital fund to build a new facility.

Baypath was founded in 1977 and has been operating at its leased Rafferty Road location in Hopkinton for 30 years in a building originally built by local volunteers.

“We do a great job with what we have,” said Glassman, “but with a bigger space we could do much more. Our “shelter of the future” includes a? “real-life” space to provide enrichment for the dogs, a quiet place for reactive dogs, special one-on-one time with humans and a comfortable place for potential adopters to see the animals in a home-like setting.”

A new facility is a long-term plan. Meanwhile, Baypath Humane Society's board hopes this year's Fur Ball will raise enough money to help support its 2014 rescue efforts.

The Fur Ball starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Acacia Indian Meadows, 275 Worcester Road (Route 9 West) in Westborough. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at www.baypathhumane.org/furball2014 or at the door for $45. Cash bar. Semi-formal attire suggested.
