Federal funding for School Department may decrease

      Westborough - As if the financial picture wasn't bleak enough, the School Department expects a decrease in federal funding for fiscal year (FY) 2009. The funding reduction will be in the area of assistance that is provided by the government for low-income students in the school district, Superintendent Anne Towle said.

Social worker requested for Shrewsbury schools

      Shrewsbury - Special Education Director Ellen Meyers has asked the School Committee to provide Shrewsbury elementary schools with a licensed social worker, saying that the schools don't have enough time or resources to handle the significant family challenges some children are facing.

Eighth-graders not allowed on varsity teams

      Marlborough - Eighth-graders will no longer be allowed to play on varsity sports teams at Marlborough High School. The decision came at a meeting of the School Committee, after members differed sharply on the issue. Committee member Mark Hediger told the full committee that the policy subcommittee voted, 2-0, to not allow the practice.

Kane Elementary School wins $500 grant
      Marlborough - For a second year, Marlborough's Francis J. Kane Elementary School has received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program that will help support the school's outreach to Kane School families.
