Algonquin girls hockey team starts season 1-1-1
By Ken Powers Community Reporter

Region - After opening the season with a disappointing loss to perennial Eastern Massachusetts power Wayland High, the Algonquin Regional girls hockey team has picked up a win and a tie and will enter its Saturday Dec. 22 game with Norwood High at the Foxborough Sports Center with a 1-1-1 record.

The win was an 8-1 thumping of Shawsheen Tech Billerica Dec.12.

Megan Lajunesse netted a hat trick for the Tomahawks, scoring her three goals in succession. She scored the final two goals of Algonquin's four-goal first period and then the first of the Tomahawks' two-goal second period.

Kathleen Clark added a goal and two assists for the winners, while Amanda Yee recorded a goal and an assist. Other scorers for Algonquin were Melanie Lowery, Lynsey Moylan and Nicole Barberio; Chelsea Campbell added two assists to the winning eff ort, and Bekka Mongeau had one.

Caity Murphy picked up the win between the pipes.

The Tomahawks followed their win three days later with a 2-2 tie of Medford at Westborough's Northstar Youth Forum. Clark scored an unassisted goal in the first period and Yee scored off an assist from Chelsea Landry in the second to support the goaltending of Murphy, who made 25 saves en route to earning the tie.

"The team is now a threeteam co-op with Hudson and Marlborough," Tomahawks coach Gina Johnston said. "But the really neat thing is that the girls have come together and are a team rather than three diff erent schools playing on one team. Our focus is still on playing and enjoying the game, but this year we're hoping to add to that fun with a few wins."

Marlborough High successfully defended the Boro's Cup championship it won last year, shutting out Wachusett Regional, 4-0, in the title game Dec. 15 at the Northstar Youth Forum.

Jon Casey scored twice and Jim Delaney and Wes Russell also lit the lamp for the 2-0 Panthers, but it was the defensive play of Russell, Al Butler and Kyle Lind in front of goalie Tim Pacific that really delivered Marlborough its second straight tournament crown.

"They put in a lot of ice time; they log a lot of minutes. It's going to be that way all year," Panther coach John Butler said. "They're our strength and we're going to take full advantage of it."

Russell, Al Butler and Lind were all named to the All- Tournament team, Russell earning Most Valuable Player honors.

Marlborough advanced to the championship game by beating Westborough, 5-4, in the first round of the tournament.
