Northborough - More than 60 headstones in the Howard Street Cemetery were overturned by vandals recently.

The act is believed to have occurred between 9 p.m. July 15 and 6 a.m. July 16, according to Northborough Cemetery Superintendent Eugene Pease.

Some of the headstones were knocked off their foun- dations while others were completely ripped out of the ground, and still others were chipped.

Police Chief Mark Leahy said no arrests have been made, but that the police have compiled a list of "persons of interest." He said anyone with information should call the detective division at 508-393-1522.

Pease said the cemetery hasn't been vandalized since the early 1970s, when 54 headstones were overturned.

Department of Public Works Director Kara Buzanoski said the town is liable for the damages.
