Local Sports Roundup: Region - In the recent Bay State Games, Westborough's Emily Mongeau helped the Central Scholastic girls lacrosse team to a 3-1 record and the bronze medal with an impressive individual effort, scoring 13 goals in the three games she played. Mongeau had five goals in a 15-6 win over Northeast, added four in a 14-10 loss to Southeast/Coastal, and four more in a 13-12 win over West in the bronze medal game. Ice hockey The Central Scholastic division team captured the bronze medal, finishing the tournament 4-3. Marlborough's Jon Casey led the way in the bronze medal game, scoring a pair of goals in a 5-2 win over Southeast. Shrewsbury's Pat Brossi also scored in the game. Casey also scored earlier in the tournament, in a 4-3 win over Northeast. Track & field Southborough's Sarah Dahlstrom, 13, had a Bay State Games to remember, winning the junior division triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, nine inches, and finishing second in the long jump (14-10) and second in the 220-meter dash (27.40 seconds). Hudson's Kristalena Lamore recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the Scholastic division competition. The 17-yearold was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash (12.85) as well as the triple jump (33, 11-1/2). Shrewsbury's Emily Hwang, 20, won the women's Open Division pole vault, clearing 10 feet, six inches. Shrewsbury's Courtney Bradley, 19, captured the 100-meter hurdles competition, covering the distance in 20.60 seconds. Shrewsbury's Tracy Flynn, 47, finished third in the women's masters division mile run (7:43.85). Hudson's Geoff King, 17, finished second in the boys scholastic high jump, leaping 6-2. Shrewsbury's Stephen Tutunjian, 17, finished third in the boys scholastic long jump (41-11-3/4). Shrewsbury's Jimmy Flynn, 17, finished third in the 220-meter dash (22.92). Southborough's David Nigrosh, 14, won the boys junior division 100-meter dash (25.64), while Marlborough's Kyle MacKinnon, 14, was third in the event (26.50). MacKinnon finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (59.37). Boys tennis The Shrewsbury duo of Nisarg Chhaya and Ajeya Sekhar captured a gold medal in the 16-under doubles competition, while Kyle Samant of Shrewsbury won a silver medal in the 14-under singles competition. Synchronized swimming In the 14- to 24-yearold solo division's free routine, Shrewsbury's Julie Silverman, a member of the Synchro-Maids of Central Massachusetts, won a silver medal. Boys basketball In the ninth- and 10thgrade division, Westborough's Matt Van scored 70 points, but the Central team failed to qualify for medal play. Van scored 26 in an 82-77 loss to West, 18 in an 80-71 loss to Southeast, 15 in a 74-45 loss to Coastal and 11 in an 80-48 loss to Metro. In the 11th- and 12th-grade division, Marlborough's George Jordan scored 22 points in a 102-89 loss to Metro. Chris Pinsonault, Jordan's teammate at Marlborough High, scored 18 in 1-2 Central's lone Bay State Games win, an 88-86 victory over West. Field hockey Marlborough's Chris Dirico and Westborough's Sarah Becque each scored a goal for Central, which went 1-2-1 in pool play and failed to qualify for the tournament's medal round. |
