WCCCC tournament sees first hole-in-one
By Catie Foertsch Community Reporter

Westborough - On July 22, the Westborough Country Club Charity Corporation (WCCC) held its sixth annual golf tournament, which raised about $14,000 for local charities including Meals on Wheels, the Senior Center fuel assistance program, the St. Luke's English as a Second Language program, and several others.

The tournament highlight was the hole-in-one hit by Rob Fitzgibbon on the 16th hole, the first ever hole-in-one for the tournament.

The WCCCC tournament has always featured hole-inone contests with new cars as prizes. This year, a hole-inone on the fifth hole would have won a two-year lease on a Lexus ES 350, courtesy of Northborough Lexus. A hole-in-one on the seventh hole would have won a new Jeep, courtesy of Dan's Jeep.

The Westborough Country Club is a nine-hole course, and golfers played holes one through nine from one set of tees, and the second nine-hole round from a second set of tees placed about 20 yards farther from the holes. Although Fitzgibbon hit his hole-in-one into the hole on the seventh green, it was during the second round, counted as the 16th hole, and did not win him the Jeep. He did, however, win $500 toward new clubs and a new driver.

The tournament attracts many sponsors, hole sponsors and raffle donors for a good reason, according to WCCCC member Jim Willwerth.

"All the money we raise stays right here in Westborough, and our donors appreciate the good work their donations do in our community," Willwerth said.

The tournament had seven major sponsors (Ball Financial Services, Carruth Capital, DFX Logistics Inc. - Frank Davidson, E.L. Harvey & Sons, IBM, Unisign of Northborough, and Westborough Bank), 45 hole sponsors, and more than 60 raffle donors.

In addition to Willwerth, WCCCC committee members are Chair Craig Nichols, Paula Covino, Lee Crowley, Denzil Drewry, Police Chief Alan Gordon, Dick Harris, Diane Leonard, Dave Mc- Closkey, PGA Golf Pro Jack Negoshian, Al Popsuij and Lisa Welsh.
