Local Sports Roundup: Northborough - Thanks to a five-run fifth inning, the Lions overcame a one-run deficit and defeated the Tigers, 12-8, to capture the Northborough AAA Baseball Championship. The game was the Lions' third in the playoff s and firstever under the lights at Casey Field. The Lions jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings, only to have the Tigers storm back and tie the game, 6-6, in the third. In the fourth inning, the Tigers scored two more runs, and, after the Lions scored one of their own in the inning, led 8-7 as the game headed to the decisive fifth inning. Players on the Lions championship team were Nick Arena, A.J. Carmody, C.J. Hall, Michael Henry, James Junker, Dylan Lindsey, Jake Rosen, Trevor Ryan, Jules Stackhouse, Mike Tozeski, Ben Ushman, Nick Vincile and Matt West. Coaching the Lions were Jim Arena, Jeff Junker, Howie Rosen and Steve Tozeski. The Lions finished their season 9-4. Hudson Youth Baseball It took extra innings, but the Hudson Junior Hawks 10- year-old all-star team captured the Western Massachusetts State Championship with a thrilling, come-from-behind, 4-3 win over Northampton. The game was tied, 1-1, after six innings, but Northampton scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead. Hudson rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three runs to claim the championship. The victory earned the Junior Hawks a berth in the New England Regional tournament, held last weekend in Rochester, N.Y. Members of the championship Junior Hawks team are Connor Bacon, Eric Davis, Nick Gigliotti, Brandon Miller, Ben Palatino, Mike Paquette, Bobby Rhodes, Steve Rivela, Ben Smith, Nick Staszewski, Luke Medeiros, Noah Mac- Donald and Kyle Sullivan. Jim Rivela served as head coach of the Junior Hawks and was assisted by Tom Bacon, Mike Gigliotti and Mark Sullivan. Shrewsbury Shockers softball The Shrewsbury Shockers, an Under-12 fast-pitch softball team, won the Mid- Summer Slam Open Invitational Tournament, held July 20 to 22 in Douglas. The Shockers were 6-0 in the 12-team tournament and defeated Hopkinton, 9-3, to win the title, the third tournament win of the summer season for the Shockers. Members of the team are Erica Armenti, Kate Bisnette, Jess Bonollo, Natalie Burchat, Kate Curtis, Olivia Giedymin, Jenna Maksian, Kimmie Morris, Kaci Panarelli, Jenna Pickett, Lauren Pickett, Katherine Pitney, Victoria Pitney and Kelsey Shea. George Morris coaches the team and is assisted by Eric Shea. Shrewsbury team wins, too Congratulations also go out to the Shrewsbury allstar team that won the Major Division of the Holden Invitational Tournament, held last month. Players on the team were Mike Bodden, Zach Dionis, Nick Diverdi, Matt Ermilio, Aaron Hayden, Sam Levine, Tony Manzello, Chad O'Neill, Kyle Puzar, Matt Schaeffer and Jay Snay. The team was coached by Mark Dionis, Bud Ermilio, Warren Hayden, Brett Malboeuf and Jay Snay. |
