Local Sports Roundup Marlborough - The Marlborough High summer basketball team won their second straight Worcester Summer League title earlier this month, defeating Wachusett Regional in the final. Marlborough has only competed in the Worcester summer league for the last two years. "I've been saying for the last two years that this is among the best summer leagues in the state," said Joe Flynn, who served as the team's coach. "Because of that I think this is a real testament to how hard these kids have worked and how unselfishly they play." Leading the team, which called itself by the same name the High School team uses - the Panthers - was the troika of pointguard Conner Flynn, Joe Flynn's son, and inside presences George Jordan and Andre Beauchamp. Conner Flynn led the way in the final, scoring 19 points, while Jordan added 16 and Beauchamp 14. Marlborough defeated Shrewsbury in the semifinals, erasing a 10-point deficit with just 2:30 to play, closing out the game with a furious, 16-3 rally. Jordan tossed in a gamehigh 21 points in the Shrewsbury game while Beauchamp added 17 and Conner Flynn added 16. Other key players in the team this season included Graham Asum, Dan Imparato, Fabrese Yoyo, Canaan Severin, Carlos de La Cruz, David Barille, Luke Bella- Spooner and Josh Carter. Golf Brittany Altomare fired a 1-over-par 147 and finished tied for fourth at the Massachusetts Women's Open held Aug. 14 and 15 at Ipswich Country Club. The rising junior at Shrewsbury High carded her best round of the two-day event on the first day, firing a 3-under 70. Altomare had five birdies in the first round, including three in a fourhole stretch between holes 10 and 13. Altomare's eff ort in the state Women's Open came on the heels of her performance at U.S. Girls Junior Championship in Lakeville, Wash., where she just missed advancing to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Altomare was ousted by fourth-seeded Kristen Park of Buena Vista, Calif., in a match that went 21 holes before it was decided. That was Altomare's second round of that day and both needed extra holes to be decided. She defeated Diane Kwon of Freemont, Calif., in 20 holes in her morning match. Stan Musial baseball The Franklin-based Clarmac team defeated Hudson in the Hockamock League's best-of-three final series, ending Hudson's satisfying 22-10 season on a disappointing note. The two one-run victories over Hudson - 4-3 and 5-4 - allowed Clarmac to capture its sixth consecutive Hockamock League title. Playing well for Hudson in the playoff s were Zach Platts, Marc Exarhopoulos, Mike Colecchi, Jon McLaughlin, Brian Farrar, Bobby Montalto, Matt DiTullio, Casey Rivers, Justin Veo and Tom Joyce. Until this season, when it moved to the Hockamock League, Hudson had competed in the Central New England Baseball Association. "It was a good season," said Veo, who doubles as Hudson's manager. "We're very pleased to be in this league. It was disappointing how our season ended, but we had fun and played well. I thought we made a good first impression on the rest of the league as a team who is going to come out every night and compete." Send news about your sports team to kpthesportsguy@yahoo.com. |
