Flower show features Westborough's history Westborough - The Garden Club will present "Westborough's Treasures Past and Present" at the 2007 Westborough Flower Show at the Tatnuck Booksellers, Lyman Street, from 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 26 through 7 p.m. Friday Sept. 28. The Division I designs will decorate dinner tables for the town's historic celebrities, ranging from Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin, to Nikki Stone, 1998 Olympic Gold Medal winner. "A Picnic at Chauncy Lake" will present a picnic for two at the once popular recreation park. "Nipmuc Harvest" offers a basket arranged with fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers, recalling the Nipmuc Native Americans who once lived in the town. The Division II exhibits commemorate Westborough's history with "Straw Hats on Parade." The town was the site of the world's largest straw-hat factory in 1878. "Westborough … the Carnation Capital" will display wreaths made primarily from carnations. From the early 1900s, carnations from Westborough greenhouses were sent worldwide. |
