Organizations prepare for 'International Day of Peace'
By Angela Greiner Contributing Writer

Region - Children and adults around the world will pause for a minute of silence Friday Sept. 21 as part of the day-long activities planned for the "International Day of Prayer and Peace."

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed resolution 36/37 in 1981 declaring an International Day of Peace. In 2001, the UN once again passed a resolution, this time declaring Sept. 21 the official International Day of Peace. Peace activities are held around the world in churches, schools and government and business communities.

The minute of silence is one of many events that the UN participates in to recognize the day of peace that includes concerts, vigils, pledges, projects, workshops and parties.

The First Methodist Church in Hudson kicked off the International Day of Peace with a peace demonstration Sept. 20 that included singer-songwriter Shelley Tworoger and a candlelight procession.
