Shrewsbury festival weekend to include parade Sept. 30

Shrewsbury - As Shrewsbury gears up for the 11th Annual Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival, Grand Marshals Sue DiLeo, Sue Falzoi and Joyce Perreault have released a calendar of events for the weekend.

Friday Sept. 28

The Senior Center will hold an open house from 12 to 3 p.m. Interested seniors will meet center staff and learn about different programs off ered including Meals on Wheels, yoga, Pilates, writing and more.

The Shrewsbury Child Development Committee is sponsoring a Harvest Fest at Floral Street School from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The SCDC requests a $2.50 per person donation, with a family cap of $10.

An art exhibit at the Senior Center will highlight the work of local artists from 5 to 8 p.m.

Saturday Sept. 29

The Shrewsbury Sportsman's Club will host a pancake breakfast and fishing derby for kids from 7 to 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded.

The 11th Annual 5K Road Race and Funwalk will leave Dean Park at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Entrance fees for the event are $10 pre-event and $12 race day for adult runners, $6 pre-event and $8 race day for children under 18 and walkers.

A craft fair will be held at Oak Middle School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Oak Middle School will also host an Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where residents can learn about nonprofit organizations in town. The event will include giveaways, refreshments, a tribute to Anthony "Spag" Borgatti and Babs and Irving "Jim" Donahue Jr. Visitors to the expo will get a chance to try out a U.S. Army climbing wall and can send a message via satellite to a soldier stationed in Iraq.

The library will host a free magic show at 10:30 a.m. Tickets can are available in the Children's Room in the library or by calling 508-842- 0081, ext. 4.

There will be an open house at the #5 School House at Old Mill Road and West Main Street from 1 to 3 p.m. Children are invited to participate in an authentic lesson from the 1800s using slates, readers, games and period clothing. Admission is free. The Spirit of Shrewsbury Parade will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday and travel from Beal School to Oak Middle School. Special seating at a reviewing stand will be available for residents 90 years

and up.

The Artemus Ward Museum Barn will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Sunday Sept. 30

A Family Funfest will be held at Oak Middle School, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include moonwalks, a U.S. Army climbing wall, food and entertainment.

The Spirit of Shrewsbury Parade will begin at 1 p.m. and travel from Beal School to Oak Middle School. Special seating at a reviewing stand will be available for residents 90 years and up.

People will have a chance to test the town's most delicious treats at Dessert Night at Oak Middle School from 5 to 6 p.m. Desserts will be available for purchase.

Shrewsbury Idol's contestants will compete in the Oak Middle School auditorium at 6 p.m.
