Weekly sports roundup Region - Shrewsbury's Nick Rodriguez showed the consistency of a PGA Tour professional and as a result was named the Player of the Year of the 12-year-old division of the U.S. Kids Golf Boston Summer Tour. Nick, the son of Marny and Ted Rodriguez and a seventhgrader at Oak Middle School, finished second in all seven of the tour tournaments he competed in over the summer. Nick opened the tournament season with a 77 July 5 at Natick's Sassamon Trace Golf Course, and followed that up with an 81 at Stow Acres Country Club July 10. From there he went to Braintree Municipal July 23, where he fired an 86. Nick opened August with a 77 at Hyde Park's George Wright Golf Course, followed that with a 79 at Newton Commonwealth Aug. 13. On Aug. 15, he shot 81 at Boston's Franklin Park Golf Course, and, in the tour-ending tournament Aug. 27 at Brookline Golf Club, fired an 80. The win enables Nick to participate next summer in a tournament against all the other state winners in his age group in a tournament in Pinehurst, N.C. Girls soccer Shrewsbury has jumped out to a 3-0-1 mark with Nikki D'Errico setting the pace, scoring four goals and setting up four others. Both Colonial goalies have played well; Kim Nickel has allowed one goal in two games, while Demi McLaren has allowed a goal in both games she's played. Westborough (4-1), has been led by Beth Ledoux (four goals, one assist), Emily Van Dam (four goals), and Becky Mongeau (three goals, one assist). Goalie Meg Cullin is allowing a goal a game. Samantha Abro has scored five goals and recorded an assist to lead Algonquin to a 3-1 mark. Katherine Matthews has been solid in goal, surrendering an average of just one goal in each game she's played. Marlborough is 3-1-1 overall, with Amy Cramer leading the Panthers in points (three goals, three assists) and Vicky Delano leading them in goals (four). Jesse Bryan has allowed just one goal in 3-1/2 games played, a goals-against average of 0.33. Sam Correia (two goals, three assists) and Laura Bowen (three goals, one assist) lead 3-3 Hudson. Boys soccer St. John's is off to a fine start, with four wins in its first five games. Chris Stoker leads the way with four goals and one assist, while Tyler Uppstrom, Charlie Long and Chris Perkins have booted home two goals each. In goal George Droulliard has allowed a pair of goals in five games. Assabet Valley has started quickly as well, going 2-0-1. Gus Chaves leads the Aztecs with seven goals and three assists, while Hoiry Arroyo has six goals and two assists and Oliver Carbajal two goals and six assists. Algonquin entered the week with an undefeated, untied record of 2-0, while Marlborough was 2-1-1 and Hudson Catholic 2-2. Golf St. John's is steaming toward a third straight Central Mass. title, having opened the 2007 season with seven straight wins. Hudson has also opened the season 7-0, while Westborough is 7-1 overall, Algonquin is 6-2, Shrewsbury is 5-2, and Marlborough 5-3-1. Cross country On the girls side, Algonquin has raced out to a 4-0 record, while Shrewsbury and Marlborough have posted matching 2-1 records. On the boys side, St. John's leads the way followed by Westborough, Shrewsbury and Hudson Catholic - all 2-0 - and 1-0 Marlborough. |
