Weekly sports roundup Region - Led by Jake Wilson, who has seven goals and two assists, the Algonquin Regional boys soccer team sits atop the Mid-Wach A standings with a 7-0-1 league mark. Other leading scorers for the Tomahawks, who are 7-2-2 overall, are Josh Whitney (four goals, three assists), and John Edman (five goals, one assist). Baran Cansezer has seen the bulk of the work in net for Algonquin, having played in eight games. Cansezer has allowed nine goals in those eight games. Backup goaltender Jose Silva has allowed four goals in the four games he has played. Marlborough High sits atop the Mid-Wach B standings with a 5-0-2 league mark. Maarten Van Ess is the Panthers' (6-2-2 overall) leading scorer, with seven goals and 10 assists, while Flavio Pereira, with 11 goals, is the team's leading goalscorer. Pereira also has two assists. The St. John's team entered play this week with a 13-1 record. Sean Mitchell leads the way for the Pioneers with 12 goals and five assists. Charlie Long has scored nine goals and set up eight others. Other scorers include Chris Stoker (seven goals, eight assists), Andrew Powell (nine goals, four assists), and Tyler Uppstrom (nine goals, three assists). Westborough High entered play this week with a 6-4-1 record (4-2-1 in Mid-Wach B), Shrewsbury 4-4-4 (3-2-3 in Mid-Wach A), Hudson 7-3-4 (3-3-2 in Mid-Wach C). Assabet Valley remains near the top of the Colonial Athletic League with a 7-1-1 overall mark and 6-1-1 league record. Hudson Catholic is right behind the Aztecs with a 4-3-1 league mark and a 4-4-1 overall record. Field hockey Shrewsbury High's hopes for an undefeated season remained alive as play began this week, the Colonials with a 8-0-4 overall mark and 7-0-3 Mid-Wach A League record. Kathryn Nelson leads the team with 12 goals and seven assists. Other leading scorers include Alyssa Ineson (six goals, five assists), Erin Crosson (nine goals, one assist) and Kara MacIntire (one goal, six assists). Westborough entered play this week with a 8-1-2 overall record and a 7-1-1 mark in Mid-Wach B. Marlborough was 5-4-3 overall, Algonquin 4-5-3. Boys cross country St. John's finished sixth in the Division 1 race of the Bob McIntyre Bay State Invitational, held Oct. 13 at Franklin Park in Boston. The Pioneers totaled 323 points. Brookline won with 72 points. Ben Perron was St. John's top finisher, coming in 20th, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16:35. Other top Pioneers finishers were Brian Clark (45th, 16:57), Kevin Turner (58th, 17:05) and Chris Tieuli (81st, 17:22). Westborough (354 points) finished ninth in the meet, Shrewsbury (429 points) 14th, and Hudson (909 points) 38th. Tom McDonough was first across the line for the Rangers, finishing 23rd in a time of 16:41. Teammate Dave Brown was 42nd, covering the course in 16:55. For Shrewsbury, Chris Covello finished 46th, Anthony Frissora was 61st and Brent Underkoffler was 64th. Girls cross country At 24th, Shrewsbury High was the top local finisher in the Division 1 race at the Bob McIntyre Invitational. Kristin Ross led the Colonials, finishing 66th, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20:57. Westborough, which finished 25th, was led by Alexis Teevens (42nd, 20:29).
