Letters to the editor
Registrar thanks businesses, leaders, scouts

To the Editor:

Our first all day Girl Scout event was recently held on Sunday, September 23rd at the Hudson Elks. The event was opened to all registered and newly registered Girl Scouts. The event gave girls a little taste of what scouting is all about. Activities included stone pets, small decorated pocket books, nail painting, face painting, gimp, pot holder weaving, s'more craft, cup cake decorating, bracelet making and games. Girls were also able to make their own edible s'mores, sing songs, and enjoy various goodies to eat. The day turned out to be a huge success.

I would like to thank the following businesses for their generous donations: The Hudson Elks, Bryers Ice Cream - Natick, McDonald's - Maple Street - Marlboro, Hannafords - Marlboro, Eslers Bakery - Marlboro, Price Chopper - Marlboro.

A special thank you goes out to all the wonderful Girl Scout leaders that made donations of craft supplies and prizes and to all the leaders that helped out on the planning committee and at the event. The last thank you goes out to the Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scouts that also offered their time to make this day so great for the girls. This is what scouting is all about!!!

Headmaster expresses thanks

Dear Editor:

On behalf of Hillside School, thank you very much for your wonderful article about Alf Wilson and the Hillside Farm ("Innovative teacher offers students a fresh perspective," which was published in the October 5 issue of the "Educating ... Outside the Box" column).

Writer Melissa Muntz did an admirable job in capturing the spirit of discovery and adventure which is a hallmark of the Hillside Farm program. In addition, her profile of Alf Wilson, the program's director, accurately portrayed his enthusiasm and commitment as a teacher and educator.

While the Hillside Farm is well known in Marlborough, Hillside's growing reputation as a premier junior boarding school for boys is becoming apparent. Last year, for example, many of our graduating seniors went on to such prestigious independent high schools as Taft School, Tabor Academy and nearby St. Mark's School.

We are very proud of our boys who, over the years, have proven themselves to be academically competitive and accomplished, thanks, in large part, to our quality curriculum and dedicated faculty and staff.

We believe that your article on Mr. Wilson and the Hillside Farm Program is further evidence of Hillside School's creative and effective approach to teaching that is being proven every day in our classrooms.

Again, thank you for taking notice of our Hillside Farm, as well as Hillside School.

Sincerely, David Z. Beecher Headmaster Hillside School Marlborough
