Soccer season winds down for area high schools

Region - The Westborough High boys freshman soccer team completed a season to remember recently compiling a 17-0-1 record.

The Rangers tied the Algonquin freshman team, 2-2, in their season opener and then proceeded to reel off 17 consecutive wins. They scored 11 goals in one game and 10 in another, and also had an eight-goal game, two seven-goal games and a sixgoal game.

Included in the victory total were a pair of wins over St. John's and Wachusett and one over Marlborough as well as a victory over Algonquin in the second meeting of the teams.

Westborough, under the direction of first-year coach Francisco DeOliveira, scored 84 goals during the season.

Evan Cummins was the team's leading scorer, booting home 24 goals. He was followed on the forward line by Connor Gibbs, who recorded 22 goals, Zach Hoban, eight goals, and Mike Doran, two goals.

Westborough's mid-field was patrolled by a number of players, including Nick Judd, who scored 10 goals, Steve Geller (five), Brian Goodliffe (four), as well as Cam Houghton, Luke Gardner, Logan Scharon and Fernando Mora Silva.

The Rangers' defense, which allowed just six goals all season, was led by Billy Kajos, Matt Halley, David Lloyd, Matt Cullen, David Silverman, Jake Philips, Nick Eames and PJ Welcher.

Seeing time in goal for Westborough were Doug West, Jack Tragakis and Kevin Kotosky. The trio combined to post 13 shutouts, including 10 straight between Sept. 12 and Oct. 11.

Boys varsity soccer

St. John's finished its season, 18-1, and captured the Central Mass. Conference's regular-season title with a 6-0 mark. The Pioneers were led in scoring by Sean Mitchell, who netted 17 goals and set up five others. He was followed by teammates Charlie Long (10 goals, nine assists), Chris Stoker (eight goals, 10 assists), Andrew Powell (12 goals, seven assists) and Tyler Uppstrom (nine goals, four assists).

Algonquin finished its season, 10-2-4, and won the Mid-Wach A with a 10-0-2 record. The Tomahawks were led Jake Wilson (nine goals, two assists) and Josh Whitney (five goals, three assists).

Marlborough captured the Mid-Wach B crown with a 6-0-2 league record, which was part of a 10-3-3 regularseason mark. Flavio Perreira led the Panthers in scoring with 20 goals and six assists. Maarten Van Ess added 10 goals and 13 assists and Wagner Rosa chipped in five goals and 11 assists. The trio ended up the top three scorers in the Mid-Wach B.

Girls soccer

With a 9-0-2 league record, Shrewsbury (13-1-2) has sewn up the Mid-Wach A regular-season title, finishing just ahead of Algonquin, which was 9-2-0 in the league and 10-4-2 overall.

The Colonials were led in scoring by Nicola D'Errico, 12 goals and 10 assists; Maura Fox, nine and six; Erin Kinback, three and 10; and Ashlyn Desrosier, three and nine.

For the Tomahawks, Samantha Friday had seven goals and 12 assists, while Samantha Abro added nine goals and five assists; Sarah Dahlstrom, eight and five; and Gillian Carlucci, seven and three.

Westborough won the Mid- Wach B league title, finishing 5-0-3 in league play and 10-2-4 overall. Marlborough ended up third in the league standings with a 4-2-2 Mid- Wach B record and a 10-4-2 overall mark.

Anette Kristiansen paced the Rangers' scoring parade, with eight goals and three assists, Betti Ledoux added five and five, and Emily Van Dam had seven and one.

Amy Cramer led the Panthers in scoring with seven goals and seven assists, while Jackie Vissat and Vicky Delano each added six and three.
