Northborough - Fourteen years ago Karen Scopetski decided that selling real estate was worth a try.

Originally from Michigan, the daughter of a high-level executive constantly moving all over the Uniteåd States, she spent a fair amount of time packing and unpacking. His job demanded versatility and mobility and as his daughter she learned to adapt even with the usual pitfalls associated with frequent moves.

So, after many years in the computer industry, most notably a five-year stint with Ross Perot's technology service company EDS, Scopetski gave sales a try. Now a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Northborough, she found an instant connection with her real estate clients.

Relating it to her own experience as a child, she said, "I work well relocating people because I myself had relocated so many, many times as a child. I knew all the hassles and the problems associated and could help my clients alleviate some of those issues, making buying a home a more pleasurable and less problematic experience."

Scopetski has lived in Northborough with her husband and four children since 1993. Raising four children has exposed her to all facets of the local community. She has served on the Northborough Industrial Development Committee for three years, served on the Northborough School Building Committee and has been a member of many parent teacher organizations throughout her children's school careers. Currently she has two in college and two in high school and is very aware of parents' concerns regarding education when moving into a new community.

"I have been where many of my clients have been and understand how sometimes the right home may not come with the right education options for their children," Scopetski said. "I pride myself on being honest and straightforward and will tell you the truth, not what you may want to hear. I consider myself a straight shooter."

She went on to discuss the problems many agents have in her industry, saying that many fail in this business because they don't listen and truly understand their client's wants and needs.

"I know how to read people because I listen and zone right in on what they want and use that as my focus when finding them a home," she said. "It amazes me how much time gets wasted when you don't listen to what your client is saying."

When asked to impart the greatest advice anyone had ever given her in the business of selling homes she said, " If someone asks you a question and you don't know the answer, be honest and say you don't then go and find the answer."

She uses this no-nonsense approach with all her clients and the tangible result of that honesty has been a successful 14-year career that she continues to build even as market forces work against her.
