School Department seeks 9.7 percent increase
      Shrewsbury - The Shrewsbury School Department has requested a fiscal year (FY) 2009 budget of $46.82 million, which represents a 9.7 percent budget increase over FY 2008. Nearly half of the requested $4.15 million in additional funding is needed to cover contractual increases for existing staff .

      Shrewsbury - Spring Street Student Council members Peter DelPo, Joe Sacco and Lindsey Mahold hand bags of gently used coats to Brendan, a Refugee Apostolate employee. The Student Council recently held a coat drive to benefit the Salvation Army and Refugee Apostolate, both located in Worcester.

Holocaust survivor visits Melican Middle School
      Northborough - Holocaust survivor Janet Singer Applefield visited Melican Middle School Jan. 17 and presented "Combating Hate and Prejudice" to all eighth-grade students at the school. Applefield told students about her childhood and how she went from being a typical happy child in Poland to suddenly, at the age of 4, being separated from her parents.
