Offering spinal decompression, wellness education and chiropractic care
Dr. Francis DeFalco runs the Westborough office of Dunsky Rehabilitation and Spine Center, also located in Natick. What sets Dunsky Rehabilitation apart from most chiropractic facilities is spinal decompression therapy, DeFalco said. "Our specialty focuses on the more severe disc injury," he said. "The decompression therapy can help (those that are candidates) the people who have been unsuccessful utilizing standard medical treatment. These people have been suffering from pain for many years: they've been through physical therapy, they've had regular chiropractic care, they've had injections, and are now living on medications and are not living life with quality. Those are the people we want to see." Research has shown that spinal decompression may reverse the damage to injured discs and the spinal column, according to DeFalco. While not everyone is a candidate, for some, it may provide an alternative to either surgery or living with the pain forever. Because the treatment is uncommon in the area, DeFalco has patients from all over the region. "We have patients who will travel large distances to get this treatment," DeFalco said, "because they've been through everything else … They've basically been told there's nothing else they can do." Another reason why people travel from Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire is that Dunsky Rehabilitation and Spine Center trains doctors all around the country to be proficient and on the cutting edge with this therapy. All of the doctors at Dunsky Rehabilitation and Spine Center all members of the American Spinal Decompression Association. This is important because there are many clinicians out there that have no formal training in this revolutionary therapy. DeFalco grew up in Auburn and went to St. John's High School and Assumption College before studying in Chicago, Ill., to become a chiropractor. His interest in the field was sparked by a personal experience, when a friend was hit by a car and sought chiropractic care for his injuries. "When he described what he was dealing with, what he was going through, and what the experience was, it piqued my interest," DeFalco said. DeFalco chose to study chiropractic care rather than another field of medicine because of its natural approach. "I found I could be a doctor, with a philosophy that resonated with me - doing things naturally, working with the body, exercising and diet," he said. In keeping with that commitment to wellness and preventative care, Dunsky Rehabilitation and Spine Center off ers a program that focuses on weight loss as well. Since many spinal problems are related to obesity, the center off ers tools such as educational programs, high-end supplements and Gene SNP DNA analysis to develop comprehensive wellness programs customized for every patient. The supplements off ered are very high quality and specific, DeFalco said. "They're nutraceutical grade, so they're very powerful, very potent, and they're isotonic … so the absorption happens quickly and very efficiently," he said. Above all, DeFalco's goal is to return patients to a better quality of life by getting the body to work the way it was intended. "The nervous system runs the body," he said. "If the nervous system isn't working well, then you're not going to work well." Dunsky Rehabilitation and Spine Center is located at 276 Turnpike Road, Suite 218, Westborough.
