Transforming interiors into works of art
Décor Custom Interiors
"I have customers that I'm doing their third home," Usha said. "When I go to a home consultation, I am totally into it: [the clients'] psychology, how they've decorated. Then I'm committed for the rest of their life … It's a lifetime commitment." That dedication to her customers clearly pays off . Although the showroom has been without a permanent sign at its new location at 26 South St. since it opened nearly a year ago, that hasn't hampered her business. "People have looked for me by driving around and coming in … I had the best summer in five years," Usha said. "It's almost a year and I don't have a sign and I'm still doing great." She recently received approval for a sign, and plans to have it installed in the near future, she said. Usha credits Décor's success to her own love of interior design. Although she has a degree in chemistry, she has worked in interior design for more than 30 years. "I am so passionate about it," she said. The showroom reflects that passion, with artwork, furniture and draperies displayed as they would be in a home. In fact, Usha considers Décor both a destination for customers and a version of home for her. "When I come to work, I have come home in the most serene, relaxed place," she said. "I want a very relaxed atmosphere here." As for the current "fashion," Usha refuses to rely on what's popular. "People will ask me what's in style. I tell them, 'You are the style,'" she said. "If it's your home, if you're putting your feelings into it, you're going to collect things over time. You're collecting the memories of your life. That's your home." That knowledge comes not only from years of experience, but also from her feelings about her customers, whether they are in Décor for the first time or have been back again and again. "It's a matter of respect. I love my customers," Usha said. "It's a matter of respect both ways." Usha can assist with color, fabric selection and overall design. "We have a range of price points, " she said. "I don't care if you are spending $200 or $2,000." Décor off ers soft window treatments that range from ready-made to custom. Usha also does in-home consultations that can include color coordination, advice about windows, furniture placement, arrangement of artwork on walls and even staging. Also available in the showroom are decorating accents, artwork, blinds, furniture and beauty products. Usha admitted that she alone is not responsible for Décor's success. Her three employees are talented in their own right, she said. "They are wonderful with colors and design," she said. "My employees, they are the body of my store, and I am the soul."
