PHOTO/SUBMITTED Westborough - The Westborough Country Club Charity Corporation (WCCCC) assembled its charitable benefi ciaries at the Westborough Senior Center Oct. 14 to distribute the proceeds of its seventh annual golf tournament, which was held in July. As he handed checks to representatives from groups such as the Westborough Food Pantry and the Fuel Assistance Program, WCCCC member James Willwerth announced that since its start seven years ago, the WCCCC has donated more than $60,000 to charities.
"This is an astonishing sum of money for a single-town golf tournament to raise," Willwerth said.
The amount raised by the tournament has increased year by year. In 2002, its first year, $3,000 was raised and given to Westborough charities. For 2008, $18,000 was raised.
"We've been able to raise so much and to give it all to worthy causes in Westborough because there are so many businesses and individuals who care deeply about our community, and who willingly donate, year after year," WCCCC Chair Crag Nichols said. "We are truly blessed to have people of this caliber donating to our tournament."
The WCCCC supports a wide range of causes, from the Food Pantry, Fuel Assistance, and Meals on Wheels to Little League, English as a Second Language classes, and the Police Department's charitable fund.
"Every single charity we support directly benefits the residents of Westborough," said Police Chief Alan Gordon, a WCCCC member. "And this year it's especially important to help those in need, as the economic downturn and the high price of fuel oil mean many of our residents are going to be struggling this winter."
This year's tournament sponsor was IBM Corporation. Its nine major sponsors were Ball Financial Services, Bemis Associates, Carruth Capital, the Community Advocate newspaper, DFX Logistics, Goodfellas Construction, E.L. Harvey & Sons, Unisign of Northborough, and Roche Bros.
In addition, there were 51 hole sponsors and 52 raffle prize donors.
