Hudson - Former Hudson resident Lisa Bairos, now a special education teacher in Lisbon, Portugal, has been visiting Hubert Kindergarten students for the past five years to meet the children and match them up with a student pen pal from her school. Her most recent visit was Jan. 3.

During the visit, Lisa told the students stories about some of the children in Portugal. The Hudson and the Portuguese students will correspond via mail several times over the school year, sending pictures and letters to one another.

Margarida Bairos, a kindergarten teacher at Hubert, will go to Portugal to deliver some of the letters and meet the pen pals in Portugal.

According to Margarida, since the pen pal program started, some of the students who began writing letters five years ago are still corresponding with friends in Portugal.

"It is a great opportunity for the children to experience the life of a child in another culture," Hubert Principal Linda Corbin said. "The children also learn how cultures are very diff erent in some ways and yet very similar in other ways."
