Bruce Card ends a 15-year run as selectman
By Melissa Muntz Community Reporter

Shrewsbury - After more than 50 years of service to the town of Shrewsbury including 15 years on the Board of Selectmen, Selectman Bruce Card is calling it quits.

In an emotional statement at the start of the Jan. 7 board meeting, Card said he will not seek re-election in May.

"I will miss it and God bless you all," he said.

Card began serving the town as a volunteer firefighter in 1948, and became a fulltime firefighter in 1956. He was promoted to captain in 1970, a title he held for the next 20 years before retiring in 1990.

Card has been a Town Meeting member since 1977, and was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 1993.

In his statement, Card listed a series of important changes that he had helped and been a part of as a selectman, including the construction of Floral Street Elementary School, the new High School, the police station addition, the extension of sewer lines to the Edgemere part of town, and the construction of the new Fire Headquarters, the new CenTech Station, and renovations to the Harrington Avenue Station.

"A great deal of change has happened in Shrewsbury … and I'm happy and proud to have been a part of it," he said.

Card said he hopes whoever is elected to take his seat joins the board with no personal agenda other than to do what's best for the town of Shrewsbury.

Following Card's announcement, the board praised his half a century of service to the town and thanked him for his thoughtful counsel, his hard work and his commitment to getting things done in an efficient and effective way.

"I hope whoever is elected to fill your shoes has the same commitment, compassion and caring for the people of Shrewsbury that you have shown," Selectman Moira Miller said.

Card lives in town with his wife, Lucy. They have been married since 1948. The couple has four children and six grandchildren.
