Shrewsbury 'Adopt a Plot' program continues Shrewsbury - There are several areas of town that are currently up for gardening adoption in Shrewsbury. According to Parks and Recreation Director Angel Snell, the Adopt a Plot program was created by the Shrewsbury Garden Club in 2005 to get community residents and businesses involved in maintaining and planting flowers in specific areas around town, including veteran squares, park entrances and traffic islands. Boy Scouts, church groups and local businesses have all adopted plots so far and have met with members of the Garden Club to come up with a design for each location that is both attractive and realistic for the site. "Some people have more of an idea of what they'd like, but other people don't even know where to start," Snell said. Because each group volunteers to maintain a site, Snell said the program is a great way for people to save the town a little money while doing something they enjoy. "It's a great way for people to get involved while keeping their community beautiful," Snell said. Snell said people often choose areas that they pass by frequently, either because they live or work near the area, or they choose areas of town that have a special significance to them or the group they represent. The areas of town that are still up for adoption are the Maple Avenue playing fields, Melody Lane Park, Ireta Road Park, Toblin Hills, Hillando Park, the entrance to Lake Street Park, Arrowwood Park, Hills Farm Pond, Edgemere Park and Rotary Park. Plots that have already been adopted include areas of Mountain View Cemetery, Prospect Park, Jordan Pond, Gauch Park, Dean Park, the Post Office, the Walter Johnson Veteran Square and Spring Street School, as well as the war memorials at Town Hall, the Town Common and the library. Anyone who would like to adopt a plot of Shrewsbury to beautify and maintain can contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 508-841-8503 for more information. |
