Hoop Milestone in Marlborough
Jordan scored 12 points in the game. Some of you may remember the Panthers' Danielle Jenkins, who surpassed the 1,000-career point mark in 2006. Jordan is putting the finishing touches on an outstanding Marlborough career, one that has seen him demonstrate real leadership qualities. Last year the Panthers advanced to the Central Mass. semis before losing. With key senior leadership departing, Jordan has stepped in a real leadership role for coach Ilya Nicholas. Besides his leadership in the locker room, Jordan is getting it done on the court too, leading the Panthers to a 7-2 overall and 2-0 league start. Big victory for Algonquin girls Some regular season high school games mean a little more than others and Algonquin's girls 45-33 win over Shrewsbury Jan. 9 falls into that category. Ron Jones's T-Hawks are getting healthy after early-season injuries and it is showing on the court. The T-Hawks got 17 points and nearly as many rebounds from Liz Conti, and a big game from Theresa Logan - 15 points in the victory that snapped a five-game Shrewsbury win streak. Unfortunately, though, for the T-Hawks (6-2 overall), they couldn't make it a very memorable week when they dropped a 54-48 decision to a now 7-0 Fitchburg team Jan. 11. Shrewsbury rebounded that same night with a 53-37 win over North Middlesex to improve to 8-2 overall. Assabet and Hudson Catholic square off In important Colonial Athletic League action, the Aztecs and Green Wave boys and girls teams matched up on the hardwood Jan. 11, with the Aztecs getting the sweep. In the boys game, Assabet held off Hudson Catholic, 60-50, behind double-figure scoring from Dustin Taylor (15) and Alex Moore (11). Brandon Shea led the Green Wave with 11 points. Assabet improves to 5-2 overall and remains a perfect 4-0 in the league. Assabet's girls came from behind to defeat Hudson Catholic, 24-21, behind balanced scoring, with seven Aztecs putting up points. The Aztec girls improved to 6-2 overall. Lining up those foul shots Westborough youngsters have had great success in recent years in the Knights of Columbus annual foulshooting contest. Several Westborough shooters have gone from local chapter victories to win Central Mass. championships and even state titles. Westborough's Knights of Columbus, John Boyle O'Reilly Council #85, has its foul-shooting contest scheduled for Thursday Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. at Mill Pond School. The event is open to boys and girls, ages 10 through 14. Participants will compete by gender in their age division. Each competitor takes 15 foul shots. The 19 winners in each age/gender group will advance to regional/Central Mass. championships. All Westborough winners will receive a trophy. The state finals will be held at Holy Cross Saturday April 5. There is no cost to enter the contest. To participate, shooters must be 10 to 14 years old as of Jan. 1, 2008. Registration will be held on the event night at Mill Pond. Send mail and sports ideas to ron_woodcock@charter.net. |
