Rangers, Pioneers ski teams reach bottom of mountain first

Region - The undefeated ski teams from Westborough and St. John's were the big winners of the giant slalom competition of the Central Mass. Conference Ski League held recently at Ski Ward in Shrewsbury.

Rangers Meghan Donovan, Madeleine Stout and Claire Stout finished second, third and fifth, respectively, propelling 4-0 Westborough to the overall race win in the girls division.

Donovan's combined time for the race was 45.30 seconds (22.79 on her first run, 22.51 on her second). Madeleine Stout's combined time was 45.55 (22.92, 22.63), while Claire Stout's was 46.03 (23.15, 22.88).

The individual race winner was Shrewsbury High's Julie Edwards, who covered the course in a combined time of 45.21 seconds (22.65, 22.56). Noreen McDonnell finished fourth overall for 3-1 Shrewsbury, in a combined time of 45.76 seconds (23.12, 22.64).

In the boys race, Andrew Montgomery, James Crowley and Nick Angelo finished second, fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead 4-0 St. John's to the title.

Montgomery's combined time was 45.01 seconds (22.75, 22.26), Crowley's was 45.89 seconds (22.92, 22.97) and Angelo's was 46.05 seconds (23.01, 23.04).

Wachusett Regional's Taylor Smith was the individual race winner, posting a combined time of 44.99 seconds (22.43, 22.56). Shrewsbury High's Dan Pustis finished third, with a combined time of 45.02 seconds (22.30, 22.72).

Shrewsbury is 2-2 overall on the season, Westborough 1-3.

Westborough's Ryan

soars with Owls

Rachel Ryan, a 2007 graduate of Westborough High, recently completed her freshman season as a member for the Westfield State women's volleyball team.

Ryan helped the Owls capture the Massachusetts State Colleges Athletic Conference regular-season championship for the first time in more than 20 years by playing in 29 of 30 games as an outside hitter, recording 136 kills.

Ryan is participating in field events for the indoor track and field team for Westfield State during the winter, and will be a member of the Owls outdoor track and field team in the spring, and will also compete in field events during that season as well.

The Bancroft School recently recognized several local athletes for their accomplishments at the Worcester school.

Shrewsbury residents honored were senior Isabel Zinman, Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, varsity cross country; junior Victoria Baran, MVP Award, varsity girls soccer; freshman Joshua Erban, Most Improved Player (MIP) Award, varsity boys soccer; freshman Uday Agrawal, MVP Award, junior varsity boys soccer; eighth-grader Samuel Fujimori, Leadership Award, middle school cross country; eighth-grader Caleb Fujimori, Coaches Award, middle school cross country; seventh-grader Nicita Mehta, MIP Award, middle school cross country; and sixth-grader Katherine Landry, MIP Award, middle school field hockey.

Westborough residents honored were sophomore Adam Rosenberg, MIP Award, varsity golf, and seventh-grader Rebecca Elkinson, Leadership Award, middle school field hockey.

Northborough residents honored were junior Sarah Morris, Coaches Award, varsity girls cross country, and Bradley Marcus, Coaches Award, boys junior varsity soccer.
