Local sports roundup Region - The St. John's and Westborough High ski teams remained undefeated in Central Mass. Ski League action, recording three victories each during the week of Jan. 24 to 31. In improving to 16-0, the Pioneers and Rangers each won a giant slalom race and two slalom races. St. John's Andrew Montgomery had a solid week on the slopes, winning two of the races and finishing second in the third. Montgomery won the slalom race Jan. 24 with a two-run combined time of 51.89 seconds (25.83 seconds on the first run, 26.06 seconds on the second run). He won the Jan. 28 slalom race with a combined time of 57.1 seconds (28.55 on both runs). In the Jan. 31 giant slalom race, he was second overall with a 49.44 combined race (25.20, 24.24). Other St. John's skiers who performed well included Adam Dexter, Chris Syslo, Nick Angelo and Brendan Toohey. Dexter finished fourth overall in the Jan. 28 slalom and the Jan. 31 giant slalom races. Syslo was third overall in both the Jan. 24 and Jan. 28 races. Angelo was fourth overall in the Jan. 28 race and fifth in overall in the Jan. 24 race, while Toohey was third overall in the Jan. 31 race. Shrewsbury High skier Dan Pustis finished second overall in the Jan. 28 race and fifth overall in the Jan. 31 race. On the girls side of the competition, the Rangers consistently had two or three skiers among the top five overall finishers of each race. Westborough's Claire Stout won the Jan. 28 slalom race with a combined time of 61.86 seconds (30.93 in each run). She was fourth overall in the Jan. 31 giant slalom race with a combined time of 48.26 (24.08, 24.18). Other Rangers who placed in the top five in the races included Meghan Donovan and Madeleine Stout. Donovan was second in the Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 races and fourth overall in the Jan. 28 race. Madeleine Stout finished third in the Jan. 31 race and fifth in both the Jan. 24 and Jan. 28 races. The Shrewsbury High girls ski team (11-5) had a pair of consistent performers in the races in Julie Edwards and Noreen McDonnell. Edwards won the Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 races and finished third in the Jan. 28 race. In the Jan. 24 race, Edwards had a combined time of 56.83 seconds (27.98, 28.85). In the Jan. 31 race, Edwards's combined time was 47.52 (23.96, 23.56). McDonnell was third in Jan. 24 race and second in the Jan. 28 race. Shrewsbury gymnasts compete in Maryland Five gymnasts from Shrewsbury who practice at the Massachusetts Gymnastics Center in Westborough competed at the Maryland Classic Gymnastics Meet Jan. 18 through 20. The girls - Madison Killay, Lindsey Manea, Julia Pitney, Madeline Konz and Sabrina Knight - competed in diff erent levels during the weekend. Killay placed first in the all-around in her age group, thanks to first-place finishes on the uneven parallel bars, the vault and the floor exercises. Manea finished first on the balance beam and second in the all-around competition overall. Pitney, Konz and Knight all finished first in their age group in the all-around competition.
