Schools offer safety reminders in light of tragedy Shrewsbury - Shrewsbury school officials are reminding parents and bus drivers to be diligent in terms of bus safety following the death of 5-year-old Darnell Cobb, who choked to death on a Marlborough school bus last month. Shrewsbury Transportation Director Drew Damien, Superintendent Dr. Anthony Bent and Business Services Director Ann Mahan met following the accident in an effort to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring in Shrewsbury. "We have discussed at great length what happened and what we can do to learn from this unfortunate and tragic event," Damien said. "Hopefully this will make us all be a little bit safer." In an e-mail message to AA Transportation, which provides busing service to the town, Damien encouraged drivers to adhere to a new proactive policy designed to keep Shrewsbury students safe. "I would ask that all drivers and monitors pay special attention to backpacks on the bus, and enforce the policy of not having backpacks opened while riding on the buses," the e-mail reads. "When backpacks are closed for the school bus ride, we can be certain that items will not be removed from them that could become choking hazards, and items will remain securely in the bags, should they tip over, or fall off of the seat." Damien also encouraged drivers to enforce a no eating or drinking policy, and be extra diligent in checking their buses between runs each day. While drivers are the primary authority when it comes to bus safety, Damien encouraged parents to talk with their children about the responsibilities they have while traveling to and from school. "They need to hammer away at appropriate behaviors, reminding students not to peruse the items in their backpack while on the bus and certainly don't put anything in your mouth," he said. "This is especially important for young children to hear because it sets a good foundation for proper behavior." He encouraged any parents who have questions and concerns about their child's safety traveling to and from school to contact him at 508-841-8408. |
