'Relay for Life' kicks off in Marlborough area Feb. 28
Marlborough - Those interested in joining millions of others across the country in the fight against cancer are invited to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. A kick-off celebration for Marlborough and Hudson residents is scheduled for Thursday Feb. 28 at the Masonic Hall, 208 Main St., Marlborough at 7 p.m.

Anyone interested in helping the planning committee, becoming a team captain, volunteering or just finding out more about Relay for Life is encouraged to attend the kick-off .

For more information about Relay for Life, to find out how to volunteer, or to RSVP for the kick-off , call David Hirx of the American Cancer Society at 203-379-4755 or send e-mail to david.hirx@ cancer.org.

"I encourage anyone interested in joining the Relay for Life to call the American Cancer Society and volunteer," Hirx said. "The relay will be a great way to renew our hope in the fight against cancer, while also doing something practical to support the American Cancer Society's programs of research, education, advocacy and service."

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's most successful national fund-raiser. Relays are 12 to 24 hours in length and run overnight. Teams of eight to 15 people camp at a local high school and take turns walking, jogging or running around a track. Cancer survivors begin each relay by walking the first "Victory Lap" in a celebration of survivorship. Also, a Luminaria Ceremony beginning after dark honors cancer survivors and remembers those who are no longer with us.

Teams are encouraged to camp in tents and enjoy the great music, food and camaraderie of the event.
