Gymnasts perform well in competition

Region - Local gymnasts from Westborough's Massachusetts Gymnastics Center (MGC) turned in impressive performances at the Maryland Classic, held in Landover, Md., earlier this month.

The highlight of a stellar weekend of competition was the first-place finishes recorded by the Level 6 and 7 teams.

The Level 6 team was led by Madeline Konz, 9, of Shrewsbury. Konz finished first on the balance beam, with a score of 9.6, and also captured top honors in the floor exercise and all-around competition. Southborough residents Charlotte Cooperman and Kerry Luiso finished fifth and sixth in the all-around in the same age group.

In the 10-year-old division of Level 6, Julia Pitney of Shrewsbury used secondplace finishes on the balance beam and in the floor exercise to propel her to the all-around title. Westborough's Sarah Steinberg was first in the floor exercise and second in the all-around. Westborough's Jen Litchfield was third in the all-around.

The Level 7 team was led by Madison Killay, 10, of Shrewsbury, who captured the overall title with first-place finishes in the vault, the uneven parallel bars and the floor exercise and a third-place finish on the beam. Teammate Lindsey Manea won the beam competition and was second in the all-around.

In Level 7's 11-year-old division, Westborough's Courtney Ho was first in the floor exercise. Amanda Gustafson, 12, won the all-around with first-place finishes in the bars, beam and floor, and a second in the vault. Sabrina Knight, 14, of Shrewsbury captured the all-around by winning the vault and finishing second in the floor exercise.

Other MGC athletes who performed well at the competition included Fiona Callahan, Madison Chuma, Abby Chuma and Casey Tarnow of Westborough, Southborough's Maddie Diaz and

" Emma Harrison, and Shrewsbury's Julia Schaefer.

Also recording top-six finishes were Allie Mauro, Suzy Liu, Julia O'Sullivan, Shea Russo, Emma LaCascia, Kayla Riordan, Renee Salois and Brittany Doran.

The teams competed Feb. 15 through 17 at the Buckeye Classic in Columbus, Ohio.

Shrewsbury's Gymnastics Learning Center (GLC) earned two first-place banners and one second-place banner at the Manhattan Classic Invitational, held earlier this month in New York City.

More than 30 GLC members combined to bring back 13 first-place, 18 secondplace and nine third-place medals.

Marisa Difonzo and Elizabeth Killgallon won firstplace trophies in Level 5 in the all-around competitions in their age groups. Adrienne Mazeika of Level 6 also finished first in the all-around in her age group.

Other first-place finishers included Kiley Cronin, Olivia Murphy, Virginia Handstad, Lianne Josbacher, Katie Kori, Sara Abdelouahed and Katherine McFarlane.

McFarlane, a Level 4 competitor, earned a 9.70 score for her balance beam routine, one of the highest scores awarded during the weekend for any event.
