Class II License request denied Shrewsbury - After more than a month of consideration, the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen has decided another used-car dealership is not in the best interest of the town. Matthew Grenier had been looking to secure a Class II Auto Dealer's License to operate an Internet-based specialty car business in town. Grenier needed the license to allow him access to vehicle auctions and to secure dealer plates to transport the vehicles back to his shop, MAG Auto Sales, on Route 20. His plan was to then sell the vehicles on various Internet auction sites, having no more than five cars on the site at a time. The Board of Selectmen has a long-standing limit of granting no more than 20 Class II licenses, all of which are currently held by other used-car dealers in town. Grenier had sought an exception, which he said would be justified because his business would not be a traditional used-car lot like other license holders. Although board members agreed that the business would be diff erent in the sense that it would be Internet-based, they did not believe the method of sale diff erentiates the business from other car dealers enough to grant the exception. "I haven't heard anyone say, 'It's about time: we need more used-car dealers,'" Selectman Maurice DePalo said. "The public interest is currently being served, and there is no need for additional licenses." The board unanimously voted to deny Grenier's request at its Feb. 25 meeting. |
