'Waste Watchers' to hold environmental meeting

Shrewsbury - Waste Watchers of Shrewsbury is holding an open meeting at the library Sunday March 16 at 2 p.m.

According to group organizer Melisa Hollenback, the meetings are designed to bring together people who are concerned about the environment and are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

Jackie Pratt, SELCO promotions manager, will be the guest speaker at the meeting. She will discuss electricity and water conservation and will have sign-up sheets for the Green Light Energy program and rain barrels.

The town currently off ers discounted rain barrels to residents. The 55-gallon barrels collect rainwater, which can be used for outdoor watering. Rain barrels are available to Shrewsbury residents at a discounted rate of $66.50, and funds from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will allow for a $10 discount on the first 40 barrels sold.

Residents can place orders for the barrels through Friday April 25 and can pick up their rain barrel Saturday May 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Shrewsbury Town Hall.
