Westborough girls basketball team enjoys successful season
By Ken Powers Community Reporter

Westborough - The Westborough High girls basketball team's goal of a state championship may have been thwarted by Northampton High in a Division 1 state semifinal March 12 at UMass's Mullins Center, but the Rangers still enjoyed a season worth remembering.

"We're disappointed about the fact that the season ended one game earlier than we wanted it to," Westborough coach Scott Kittredge said, "but that doesn't overshadow the fact we had a fantastic season. The district title is something the kids worked for for a long time."

The Rangers lost to Northampton in the state semifinal, 56-38, to finish the season with a 23-2 record. Northampton went on to wear the state crown, thanks to a 50-37 win over Andover High at the DCU Center March 15.

Westborough's only two losses this season were to the eventual Division 1 state champion, as Northampton also defeated the Rangers in the final game of the regular season.

"That takes some of the sting out of it," Kittredge said, "but I think more than that it shows we lost to a good basketball team."

Westborough will look to defend its Central Mass. title next season without the five seniors who have been the core of its recent success - Annette Kristiansen, Danielle Coff ey, Emily Mongeau, Laura Keaney and Emily Driscoll.

"We're going to be young, no question, but I think we'll be okay," Kittredge said, "because both sub-varsity teams [junior varsity and freshman] haven't lost in two years."

Algonquin Boosters

host hoop game

The Algonquin Athletic Boosters' Club will host the Fourth Annual Faculty- Student Basketball Game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday March 27 in the Algonquin gymnasium.

All proceeds from the event will help support Algonquin's athletic programs.

The faculty team will include English teacher John Frederick, who is also Algonquin's varsity boys soccer coach, and Assistant Principal Paul DiDomenico.

Honored at halftime will be last year's baseball, boys lacrosse and girls track teams, all of which enjoyed great success. The gymnastics team will perform routines and there will be both a 50-50 raffle and a raffle for various gift baskets.

Tickets for the game are $2 for students with a valid ID and $5 for adults. Algonquin students who attend will be eligible to enter a free drawing for door prizes.
